“Trust God and do good” (Psalm 37:3a) is such a simple phrase yet its meaning is quite significant.
As I reflect on the first quarter of 2012, I believe I’ve discovered the secret to victory in all things. True victory is found in the cycle of trusting AND doing. What you believe matters and what you do matters. Depending on the day, time, and pending circumstances, you may need a little more faith than work or a little more work than faith. I have found that both are required for lasting victory.
Faith is necessary just to show up. And I don’t say that lightly. Fear is real and if you let it, fear will paralyze you. I can recall many nights lying in bed wondering if I was doing the right thing, contemplating if I really had the guts to take my next step. And I consider myself a pretty brave woman. But as you get deeper in this journey, there will come times when nothing seems familiar and only faith in God will give you the courage to move forward.
Yet, faith alone is not enough. You must “do good”; that which is right and acceptable. How are you to know what ‘good’ is in regards to your ministry expansion? Without a detailed roadmap you won’t know. The roadmap (or expansion plan as I call it) is what guides you along the journey ensuring you are headed in the right direction. Without the plan, you can’t expand.
As a Christian leader you already know that it takes faith plus works to please God and fulfill your purpose. Let me caution you, lest you overlook this critical truth, the real secret to victory is choosing to embrace the cycle of trusting and doing. My awareness of this cycle has become more prevalent in this season of my ministry than ever before. Though I created elaborate plans—not everything worked as I intended. In those moments I needed to trust God. When I was riding high on my faith cloud singing psalms and spiritual hymns, yet not making progress for uncertainty of what to do next, is when I understood the value of having a plan on hand.
Finally, I got it. We need both faith and a plan so that we can “live safely in the land and prosper” (Psalm 37:3b NLT). Be encouraged today and know that you are not alone in this journey.
