“People love God, but hate church.” During a recent seminar session phenomenal Pastor and leader, Bill Hybels, made this resounding statement. And you know what? I concur.
Big suits draped over even bigger egos. Frilly dresses. Lace socks. Bible toting and scripture quoting. Emphatic, energetic commands spewed from a stage. Seems to me that we make it real easy for “outsiders” to hate what we do and who we are.
Aren’t we MUCH more that these images? Would you agree that life as a Believer is hardly summed up by preaching, teaching, and attending church service? If you agree—then WHY is this all what we choose to emphasize?
Rather than billboards that doom passersby to hell if they don’t “turn from their wicked ways”; shouldn’t we share boldly the benefits of our personal relationship with Christ?
Personally, I love THE church. My life has been enriched and enhanced through my relationships, the many lessons taught, the opportunity to express freely my love for God and His people—I could go on.
Rarely, do we see these images as the center of our communications. How unfortunate it is that we daily deny others these liberties because our focus is flawed.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
