Do you find yourself discouraged by the idea of living face to face with your past, your pain, and others’ perception of it all? There seems to be parading around in the public eye a myth that as leaders we have an “untouchable” tag attached to our lives. For some reason, there is exists an erroneous belief that Christian leaders don’t struggle, hurt, or experience setbacks. Should either of these occurrences creep up on us we are either immediately categorized as “in sin” or unfairly deemed a superhero by the overrated consolation phrase “God knew YOU could handle it”.
As a real-life leader with real-life issues does this flawed perspective ever frustrate you? I have found in my own life, rather than acknowledging it for what it is—other people’s way of excusing themselves of personal responsibility for their own actions, I foolishly try to live up to this unrealistic expectation. To my crazy behavior (and others like me) God responded:
“Relinquish the fantasy of an uncluttered world. Accept each day as it comes, and find me in the midst of it all. A successful day is one in which you’ve stayed in touch with me even if many things remain undone at the end of the day. Don’t let your to-do list (written or mental) become an idol directing your life. Instead, ask my Spirit to guide you moment by moment.”
This clip from my favorite devotional reminded me that God is my guide and my gauge. When wondering if I am in the right place, with the right people, doing the right things at the right time—the standard is not found in society’s perception. True peace and protection is found only in moving accordance to God’s continual prompting. Beyond this nothing else matters.
Be encouraged, remembering that along this expansion journey all that matters is that each moment is lived in a manner that is pleasing to God.
