I have a confession. Men, I know this may sound a girly, but I have I LOVE beautiful stuff. Who doesn’t right? Not the frilly, dilly stuff…but I am a sucker for the clean, crisp, and classy. As a business owner I take the liberty of expressing my appreciation for beauty in the design of my marketing materials. As a general rule of thumb, I regularly attend events that allow me the opportunity meet and network with Pastors and Christian Leaders. Typically, a week prior to an event I stock my bag with hundreds of business cards. I recall a few years ago as I was preparing for a HUGE event I ordered one thousand business cards (bad idea by the way). When I received my cards in the mail I was so excited because they were so pretty, the color matched my website, and my logo was perfectly positioned.
To my dismay, upon sharing my business card with a few leaders I received the same confused look followed by “This is a nice card, so what is that you do?” I was crushed; the marketing guru had failed at marketing. My title was clearly written on the card Ministry Marketing Mentor. I help Pastors and Christian Leaders expand their reach without compromising their message.
After the event, I realized that I had been guilty of falling into the same “cute not clear” mode of operating that many of my clients had. I see a lot of Pastors and Christian leaders fall victim to this same mentality. They create promotional material, products, and websites based that may in many ways be cute, but to those they are called to serve the benefits and value of their ministry is not clear. Can you imagine how many people who go unsupported and un-served because of the lack of clarity in communicating your message?
Are you conveying your message in the language that those you are called to serve can understand? If not here are a few tips.
- Expanding your reach has very little to do with you. It’s all about allowing others to experience God through you.
- When you’re marketing your ministry always speak in the language that those you are called to serve can understand.
- Remember it’s all about results. People are attracted to you because they want their lives changed.
Expanding Your Reach Assignment
- Review all of your current ministry marketing materials i.e. website, business card, voicemail, etc. and make sure that your message is focused on the results those you are called to serve will experience through you.
- If you are not clear about the results your target audience experiences from you, then schedule a time to speak briefly with 5 people who are target audience and ask them the following question: Why do they enjoy working with you, attending your church, or supporting your ministry?
- Record the responses exactly as they are given to you focusing on the words people use. Create a plan to change all of your ministry marketing to convey your message.
